With the arts increasingly reliant on technology, the Southern California Cinema Society in partnership with the Orange County Independent Film Festival and OCTV have chosen to honor the best Al and VFX talent with a series of in-person film screenings, online streaming opportunities, and technology specific Al & VFX awards.

STREAMING EVENTS

Multiple days of VFX and AI based film programming for festival audiences, featuring Q&A’s with visual effects filmmakers and special industry guests discussing the advantages and risks of AI technology in cinema - with selected films and events privately streamed for film professionals.

Technological advancements in algorithms and computational power enables vertical Al systems to assist in animation rotoscope and masking, assist in analysis of scripts, production storyboards and workflow assignments, while generative Al is being creatively explored by the new generation.

AI ETHICS

Submissions to this festival and contest must follow all ethical filmmaking practices - in order to ensure only responsible uses of AI-generated content. Submissions must also hold all intellectual property rights and proper licensing for all materials. Submissions must maintain transparency in all AI applications throughout the filmmaking process. Submitters are required to consider the ethical ramifications of automation in creativity and to create with the aim of increasing job opportunities during the creative process as often as possible.

FILM SUBMISSIONS

GUIDELINES

Filmmakers are invited to submit original works that are generated or enhanced using AI tools. Submissions to these showcases should highlight the potential of AI and VFX in film storytelling. Competitions will focus on AI and VFX usage that expands creative possibilities and supports great storytelling in cinema.

Award Winning films will be those submissions found to best use VFX and AI tools purposefully and creatively to enrich the story as well as the overall cinematic experience. Judges are looking at overall effectiveness in visual effects to further storytelling first, but will also be judging the effectiveness in using tools such as machine learning, generative algorithms, neural networks, etc. in the pursuit of immaculate storytelling.

JUDGING

Films are initially reviewed by seven members of the Southern California Cinema Society with the highest scoring films then reviewed and scored by the programming director of the OCIFF in conjunction with an associate team of special effects artists, technology and artificial intelligence experts, and industry professionals to evaluate films and award the winners.
